What Is The Metaverse?
The metaverse is a three-dimensional, synergetic virtual space that offers an immersive experience that goes past the limitations encountered in the physical world. It is a virtual realm where people can have the digital facsimile of themselves, engage in every day activities, free of any physical boundaries.

Key Concepts In The Metaverse

  • Data - raw information in need of capturing, gathering and compiling with the purpose to be translated to valuable business insights. Example: The metaverse relies - among other technologies such as AR, VR, HMD, IoT, 5G, AI - on digital twins that are constantly updated with data used to create a digital representation that accurately reflects the physical infrastructure. To create an accurate representation, data should be precise and truthful.

  • Interoperability - ability of a system to work with or use the parts or equipment of another system. The metaverse allows users to combine technology and reality via the use of XR, AR, MR and VR - and other access points such as computers, tablets and mobile devices. Interoperability enables this experience by providing improved continuity. Example: Think of a digital object and how it stands between various virtual worlds, regardless of how distinct they may be. To enable a simulated experience, the metaverse requires continuity which essentially translates to the ongoing existence of one's digital representation (i.e., avatar) and the virtual premise within which it exists.

  • Digital Twin - a virtual model designed to accurately reflect a physical object. Example: Tesla creates a digital simulation of its cars via the use of sensor-collected data.

  • Spatial Computing - the digitization of activities of people, objects, and the environments within interactions happen. In manufacturing, digital twins can be built for production lines, assets and any other real world scenario within a mapped production process. Example: VR Headsets, AR Glasses and Hybrid Gear.

  • Web 3.0 - the user interface (the next evolution of the world wide web) that provides access to documents, applications and multimedia on the internet. Example: Obsidian Secure Messenger - it belongs to the platform Obsidian Platform based on Blockchain and is available for Android devices. Its interface is similar to a chat room yet users are also able to exchange tokens that can be contacted.

Metaverse Real Estate And Popular Suppliers

  • Users can buy and use metaverse real estate for a multitude of purposes. They are configurable and can be bought as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and used for gaming, socialization, events and a variety of interactive experiences.

  • Given the nature of NFTs, the metaverse presents a key advantage, that of proof, as transactions are public records. Metaverse real estate can be purchased either through the platform’s marketplace or via a third party platform. The majority of metaverse real estate is currently owned by the Big Four, namely: Decentraland, Sandbox, Somnium Space and Cryptovoxels.

Metaverse Market Size Over Time

Industries Currently Using The Metaverse

It is estimated that worldwide revenues will account to approximately $490 billion in 2030 (Statista). Some of the top industries that are currently using the metaverse, are as follow:

  • E-commerce - augmented reality technology allows consumers to trust the quality and fit of a product through its accurate virtual representation, prior to purchasing it. This is advantageous for retail as it helps brands expand their customer base and reduce returns of products.

  • Gaming - next-generation gaming is forcing users to access Web3 based games where the difference between 'free to play' vs 'play to earn' is now distinct. This creates more space for users to choose which way they want to go. Interoperability allows users to invite additional players and move their virtual assets between environments without jeopardizing their integrity. Following the latest tech advancements, developers are led to the adoption of game formats that make the use of top-notch technologies (AR, VR, Blockchain etc.) needed to create more immersive games, mandatory and almost inevitable.

  • Healthcare - telehealth, is the provision of medicine as a remote service. Prior to Covid-19, 43% of healthcare facilities were able to provide remote treatment to patients whereas that figure has currently reached 95%. VR allows deeper immersion, thus a more life-like experience compared to that, that any other virtual medium can offer. Yashoda Hospitals Group is leveraging metaverse real estate to create an experience premise for its 30-year anniversary as a healthcare service provider. Medical professionals can test out and ensure the effectiveness of new surgical procedures, while still at an experimental phase, in a virtual environment prior to using them on real patients. People are ready for the metaverse in healthcare. Accenture got reactions from 16 healthcare metaverse use cases and findings showed that the use cases people are most interested in include patient education, care delivery and connectivity, such as meeting with friends and family from afar while in the hospital.

  • Workplace - the metaverse is enhancing the digital experience by enabling more online activities while giving greater access to virtual content. Activities that were previously possible via physical intervention only, are now becoming virtually possible, leading transaction costs to decrease and virtual assets to be accessible via a shared online repository; this ultimately makes room for physical collaboration to be focused on decision making. The metaverse is introducing a new skillset that is currently emerging while at the same time, it is highlighting a massive skills gap that the labor market will need to catch based on the economics of the metaverse as a new platform for operations (SkyHive).

  • Education - virtual learning is on the rise. Virtual learning has moved from online videos and courses to virtual classes where students and tutors get to interact real-time, and virtually acquired college degrees. The e-learning industry is anticipated to evolve to a $457.8 billion market by 2026.

What Consumers Think About The Metaverse
The majority of 1,000-plus U.S. survey respondents have a positive outlook. They think of the metaverse as the future of technology and an extension of reality while they anticipate that retail will soon take on too. By 2026, 25% of people will spend at least one hour a day in the metaverse for work, shopping, education, social and/or entertainment (Gartner, Inc.).

Decision Points As Precursors To Insightful Conversations That Set The Ground For Change

  • Are you ready for systemic change in your industry?

  • What foundations will you need to rethink as these grand challenges are solved?

  • How will you leverage partnerships in your next-generation innovation strategy?

  • Do you have the skills to lead the search for new computing solutions?

For decades, computers that could efficiently solve the world’s “grand challenges” have been nothing more than theoretical concepts. But enterprises can’t afford to think about them in the abstract any longer. They are rapidly improving, and their impact on industries’ most fundamental problems and parameters can either be an industry-ending event or the biggest opportunity in generations. The ones who start rearchitecting their industry today, anticipating a future with these machines, will have the best shot at the latter.
